best 4ch micro ever

Sunglasses Review ParkZone Ultra Micro T 28 Trojan

ParkZone Ultra Micro T 28 Trojan

This was my first ParkZone micro. I actually bought it as part of a RTF kit that Amazon doesn't stock anymore (or didn't when I wrote this review). This kit doesn't have a transmitter, so please be aware.

The plane is fully assembled in the box. You simply need to charge the battery, bind it to your 2.4Ghz Spektrum transmitter and you are basically ready to fly. Personally, I added some expo to the mixing to soften the feel of the plane, but keeping the full deflection of each control surface. Also added rudder mix to the ailerons to make nicer coordiated turns when being lazy and just flying the right stick (mode 2).

Flight times were well over 7 minutes on the original battery. I have purchased additional batteries from HK in China. They have 130mAh batteries that will allow for 8 - 10 minute flights with better power throughout. It does add a touch of weight, but not really an issue.

This plane will do most aerobatics (not 3D), but will slow nicely for touch and goes. I generally fly before I leave for work. I fly off the street in front of my home. Takeoffs are 3/4 power and level flight can be maintained at under 1/2 throttle. Full throttle is for getting out of trouble or for aerobatics, so not really used too much. I've been flying mine for about a year. The motor is just starting to show signs of wear and age. That's not bad for a coreless motor. Although I don't run her for hours on end, I'm very happy with the durabilty/longevity of the plane's hardware.

This is NOT A TOY. This is a full flying scale model. It will crash and break if you fly it without knowing what you are doing. Please take the time to learn to fly before jumping into this hobby. Best thing is to get a simulator and join a local flying club. Also, get yourself an AMA membership, it comes with a great magazine subscription and a million dollars of insurance (although flying in your front yard/street isn't covered).

  1. this is the plane i took on vacations, and accumulated 12 hours of flight in 5 days!
it is robust, agile, stable, can take breeze, and fun.
it can glide ok, it is surprisingly visible even when the sky is gray. it will take quite a few hits and still fly off.

the only issue i have is an improper wheel alignment.

  2. This is a fantastic little plane. Fairly aerobatic on high rates and fairly docile on low rates. In addition to using the recommended batteries (which give flight times of 5-7 minutes) I also purchased a Tenergy 3.7v 500mah 15c lipo for flight times of up to 30 minutes. It is slightly harder to fly with this heavy battery, but not impossible and a lot of fun to stay up for that long.

  3. This is a real winner. I would recommend this over the micro P-51 for someone who is a beginner or who is just moving up from a three channel plane like the J-3 or Champ. I love my bigger T-28D and the micro is just as good if not better. I think after a flight or two on the reduced rates, even a beginner would find faster and more responsive controller settings a bit easier especially when doing rolls. On slower rates rolls go so slowly the plane tends to lose more altitude than usual in the process. With full rates and some positive aileron expo on my DX6i, the plane flies like a dream. My favorite part is that it takes off in a really straight line, which makes take-offs easier than with my micro P-51 or micro J-3. The Micro T-28 also lands very smoothly and easily as long as you leave some throttle on all the way to the ground. The plane flies inverted better than any of my others. It also flies very nicely at slow speeds. I did have to cut out a bit of the foam from the box so that it would fit back in with the landing gear in place but this only took a minute. This is clearly going to be my new favorite micro, and is going to get a lot of use! What a great plane, especially for a beginning or intermediate pilot. My last three Horizon purchases, the 120SR, 4F4 Wildcat, and this Micro T-28 have all been outstanding products.

  4. I had heard that this plane flew really well and was more challenging than the Champ to fly and what I heard was correct, plus some. It looks soooo pretty in the sky flying over that I just can't get over it. I own the P-51 Mustang and Pole Cat Ultra Micros and this is by far the best option for your first 4-channel plane.

    Good luck and have fun!

Edit: Here is me having fun with my T-28!

  5. This was my first 4CH plane and I flew it 3 hours with one crash it was very easy to fly, im 11 years old the wing folded over a little when it crashed so I taped a straightened paperclip on the wing and it worked good. It's easy to see in the sky, but i would get the Night Vapor and fly it good before getting a 4CH.

  7. First, this is not a plane for beginners. By beginner I mean those who have not flown at least a 3 channel plane (this plane is 4 channel), or used rc plane simulators. For beginners, do get the HobbyZone Champ first. As an added bonus, the transmitter that comes with the Champ will work with this plane (this set does NOT come with a transmitter).

For those who have experience with at least a 3 channel plane, this is your next step. A majority of RC planes are 4 channel. You control 1) throttle, 2) elevator, 3) rudder, 4) ailerons. The difference from a 3 channel plane is that you now control ailerons, which adds another level of complexity, and fun.

This plane is built well and can withstand a number of crashes before needing repair. The weakest part of this plane is the rudder, but the rudder is also easy to glue/tape and keep on flying since it is not subject to the same forces as the wing.

Interestingly, the motor is mounted upside down, and connects to the top half of the fuselage. This is relevant... because should you hit the ground hard and crunch the front lower portion of the fuselage... the motor mount may be totally unaffected, and you can keep on flying.

The T28 will handle wind better than the Champ because of the different wing shape. However the plane is almost as light as the Champ, and you shouldn't fly in gusty or moderate-strong wind. You will also need a decent sized area to fly this plane, as it is faster. A soccer or baseball field should be fine... but a small backyard wouldn't be suitable.

Battery tip: invest in 2 or 3 Tenergy 500mah 1S batteries (available on amazon for ~$8 each I believe). These will work with the plane (plug and play) and will last about 20 minutes on a single charge, compared to the 6-8 minutes on the smaller batteries that are recommended for the T28.

This is one of the most forgiving 4 channel planes around... it requires much more attention and control input than the Champ, but is very enjoyable. For beginners.. hand launch the plane and land slowly on grass (landing gear removed), and don't use the rudder too much... just get used to flying the plane with the ailerons and rudder and controlling stable flight. Later, work on doing rolls, loops, flying upside down, etc.

    Happy flying!

  8. I started out my venture into the foamie RC world with an Park Zone Ember 2, then moved up to a Hobby Zone Champ (both great, fun little 3 channel planes for beginners).

I needed a bit more excitement though. I wasn't bored with the first two by any means; but I wanted to keep pushing myself to get better at flying...so, the T-28 Trojan was a natural choice.

She handles amazingly well! I'm actually shocked at how well this machine can be controlled; the addition of ailerons are a such an improvement. While faster than my high wing planes, isn't too fast for a large backyard. I've crashed with medium intensity into concrete and trees with absolutely no damage (the reviewer saying that a gentle crash heavily damaged their plane doesn't know what a gentle crash is).

My review is a big thumb's up. Perfect for the next step after getting some practice flying slower, more stable aircraft.

Pros: fun, a bit more speed, tough, 4 channels

Cons: none so far, except the LiPo battery shipped in the box was completely puffed out...which means it can't be used. I've got some spares from the other planes, so I use those to avoid the hassle of getting this one replaced.
