First time for everything!

swimsuits Lewis N Clark Comfort Black

Lewis N Clark Comfort Black

I am extremely sensitive to light when I sleep. Before I had this mask, I would lower the shades over the windows in the next room, close my bedroom door, lower the shades over my own windows, cover the windows again with a black out curtain, shut my eyes, AND put on a sleep mask, and I would lie awake thinking "it's as if i am staring INTO the sun."

No more. The Lewis N. Clark Comfort Eye Mask has several features that really help it get the job of blocking light done. Its most important virtue is the cushion of fabric below the eyes to the sides of the nose. Most sleep masks are held up by my nose such that there's a space on either side. The Lewis N Clark mask can block out 100% of the light there, at least as far as I can tell. Occasionally, I will roll over or something and the tiniest bit of light will come in (still much less than would come in under a regular mask) -- so the mask is not God, but I think we all knew that. Second, the mask wraps around pretty far on the sides of the face to make sure light is blocked from those angles. And finally, unlike other masks that eventually become too loose, the adjustable elastic band on this one lets you tighten the mask to keep every part of it pressed to your face. It can get too tight, but that is of course a sign that you should loosen it, and I find you'll still be in darkness. I assume the band on this mask will eventually weaken, but then you just tighten it! And when it finally gives out altogether, I'll just buy another one. It's great and it's cheap.

My only regret is that I have but two thumbs to put up for this mask.

  1. This is a great eye mask that does everything it should. It's comfortable, doesn't come off while I sleep (and I move around a lot at night), and blocks out all the light.

However, as other reviewers have mentioned, the colour bleeds out from the mask and leaves stains on your pillowcase. I was frustrated as I couldn't bleach the stains out and the dye started to bleed through to my actual pillow.

I tried washing the mask a couple times but it didn't fix the problem. I finally found a solution, though. I soaked the mask for an hour in a mixture of vinegar and water and about 1/2 cup of salt, and afterwards I hand washed it in detergeant and rinsed it several times until the water ran clear. I haven't had any problems since. I'd definitely buy this this mask again, and treat it with the vinegar/salt solution first.

  2. I purchased two of these recently, one for me, one for my husband. We both have very different facial features, and usually what works for me DOESN'T work for him.

I was pleasantly surprised when this mask worked for both of us. It's comfortable, and no light leaks through around the edges.

We're very happy, and will really appreciate them while we're tent camping in Alaska this summer (darned midnight sun!).

  3. I have the Tempur-Pedic eye mask and bought this one for my boyfriend since our bedrooom gets very bright. I used it one night and I found it to be much more comfortable than mine and not as obtrusive too. Plus, it is a lot cheaper. I would definitely recommend this eye mask over any other.

  5. There was a six-month period that, for whatever reason, the dye in these masks was not set properly and would rub off (and STAIN) anything it touched. If you look at the earliest history of this product, it had rave reviews... and then all of a sudden it just sort of fell off a cliff. I, for one, ordered this mask back in March of 2012 (doing this review in September of 2012, despite the date-stamp on the actual review, because I originally left bad feedback and am now updating it) and had it stain my sheets, so I returned it and bought something else (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0026C797C) and it just doesn't measure up to the Lewis N. Clark eye mask in any way, shape, or form!

  6. I thought about purchasing the very expensive alternative to this mask for my husband and myself. So glad the budget is too tight for it, because this mask is fantastic at this price. Highly recommend this mask. Totally blocks out the light and is very comfortable to wear. We were way overdue for new masks and these are terrific. Go, buy, NOW.

  7. I bought this since I was going to be traveling for 11 hours down to Buenos Aires. It's UBER comfortable, and blocks out light. It's lightweight too. It's soft and wonderful. I just wish I could have blocked out that annoying screaming kid next to me. Next time, I'll get ear plugs.

  8. I've tried a number of eye masks, some significantly more expensive than this, but this is the only one I use. The strap is thin and soft enough to stay comfortable even when I sleep on my side, and the mask itself is nice and soft, stays on fairly well, and does its job of blocking out light. Unbeatable, especially for the price.

  9. This is a great eye mask, and I've owned many. The usual problem with eye masks is that they don't conform to the face, and thus let light in, particularly at the bottom. The flaps are flimsy and the velcro just doesn't do the trick in keeping the mask tight to your face.

This eye mask solves both of those. The connector at the back isn't velco, it's the real thing. It's not a cheap connector. And although I was worried because the lower part of the mask was heavier, I see they had to do this to block light. Unlike the expensive Sharper Image mask I bought, the heavier area is still very thin and doesn't cause a problem when I sleep on my side or face (yes, I often wake up face down, and not on the pavement.)

If your intention is to own a TOTALLY light blocking eye mask that won't be uncomfortable in different sleep position, well, this is it. And I'm darn anal about my eye masks.

  10. I received my pair quickly and cheaply. They are really soft with some kind of cushioning inside, and have a lip at the bottom so they block out all light. They're really convenient for when my roommate is up writing a paper, and I need sleep!
